SUNCT Syndrome

The IHS describes the diagnostic criteria as any type of headache that does not fulfill criteria for one of the disorders previously described. A recently described headache syndrome is not classified to date. This is the SUNCT syndrome. This acronym stands for Short-lasting Unilateral Neuralgia from headache attacks with Conjunctival Injection and Tearing (Sjaastad et al, 1989; Sjaastad et al, 1991; Bussone et al, 1991). The majority of patients are males and have short-lasting unilateral attacks in the peri-ocular area accompanied by various autonomic disturbances, such as conjunctival injection, lacrimation, nasal stuffiness and rhinorrhea, and subclinical forehead sweating. Abnormal vasomotor reactivity was suggested by transcranial doppler studies performed by Shen and Johnsen (1994).
