12.5: Superior laryngeal neuralgia
The IHS description of superior laryngeal neuralgia follows:
A rare disorder characterized by severe pain in the lateral aspect of the throat, submandibular region and underneath the ear, precipitated by swallowing, shouting or turning the head. The diagnostic criteria are as follows:
A. Pain paroxysms felt in the throat, submandibular region or under the ear, lasting for minutes or hours.
B. Paroxysms are triggered by swallowing, straining the voice or head turning.
C. Susceptibility continues for days or weeks.
D. A trigger point is present on the lateral aspect of the throat overlying the hypothyroid membrane.
E. Exclusion of a structural lesion.
