12.4: Nervous intermedius neuralgia
This is a rare disorder characterized by brief paroxysms of pain felt deeply in the auditory canal. The IHS diagnostic criteria are:
A. Pain paroxysms felt in the depth of the ear, lasting for seconds or minutes, or intermittent occurrence.
B. Presence of a trigger zone in the posterior wall of the auditory canal.
C. Exclusion of structural lesion.
It should be noted that disorders of lacrimation, salivation and taste sometimes accompany the pain. There is a common association with herpes zoster.
