Development of the first
commercial botulinum neurotoxin product.
•An interesting series of events led to the development of botulinum
neurotoxin for therapeutic use.
–Botulinum toxin was first identified in 1895 as the causative agent in
the food borne illness known as botulism.
–In the mid-1940s, botulinum toxin type A was purified and found to be
a 900 kD protein complex.
–About 20 years later, Dr. Scott began testing botulinum toxin type A
in monkeys as a possible therapy for strabismus.
–The FDA approved testing in human volunteers in the late 1970s.
